JACKSON, Mich. – The Crossroads League Athletes of the Week were announced on Monday, recognizing the league's top individual performances from August 15 through 21. Sports Information Directors from the league institutions nominate student-athletes for the awards and vote on each week's winners.
Volleyball Attacker of the Week
Ryan Czerniak, Taylor
Czerniak led No. 22 Taylor to a pair of wins to start the 2022 campaign. The senior hit .426 with 3.6 kills per set in the two victories, going for 17 kills in 28 swings during TU's four-set win against William Penn.
Volleyball Defender of the Week
Maile Steckelberg, Saint Francis
Steckelberg racked up 60 digs over three wins for Saint Francis, posting double-figure totals in each of the matches. The senior libero finished the weekend with 4.6 digs per set and added nine aces and 11 assist in her 13 sets played.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Morgan Syoen, Grace
Syoen helped Grace to a 3-1 showing over its opening weekend, dishing out 35-or-more assists in each of GC's three victories. The sophomore further fueled the attack with at least nine digs in those three wins, collecting a pair of double-doubles.
Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Allie Schlom, Marian
Schlom netted the game-winner and added an insurance strike for No. 7 Marian in its 4-2 win over RV Saint Ambrose. The midfielder ended the match with two goals, one assist and five total points.
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Turner, Indiana Wesleyan
Turner helped No. 13 Indiana Wesleyan cruise past Lawrence Tech for an 8-0 victory to open the season. Turner anchored the dominant IWU defense, while also managing to score one goal and assist another in the lopsided decision.
Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Luan Bressey, Bethel
Bressey highlighted a 6-1 win at Holy Cross for No. 21 Bethel. The junior forward was busy, posting two goals and adding one assist to fuel the Pilots in their season-opening rout.
Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Brendan Weiger, Marian
Weiger helped Marian to a 1-0 season-opening win at Brescia, working all 90 minutes of the shutout victory in goal. Weiger saw 12 total shots and picked up a save on each of the four shots on target.
