
Bowling Seeded Eighth After Day One Qualifying
Sterling Heights, Mich. - The 2022 NAIA Men's Bowling Championship began on Thursday at Five Star Lanes with six sets of four baker games to decide seeding for day two. The Marian men's bowling team placed eighth in Thursday's baker games, earning the No. 8 seed for bracket play on Friday.
The University of the Cumberlands won the baker sets, and will be the top seed followed by St. Xavier, St. Francis, and SCAD Savannah.
Marian kicked off their baker sets with a 797 in their first four games, totaling the third best score in the opening games. Marian then rolled an 830 in the second set to remain in the top four, and followed that with scores of 821 in set three and 827 in set four. The Knights had a total of 3275 pins though four sets, and remained in the top-four locking in third place with two sets to play.
The streak of consecutive games with an 800 or better came to an end in the fifth set, as the Knights bowled a 784 in the four baker games. Marian's score dropped them out of the top-four as Tennessee Southern and SCAD jumped Marian. The Knights closed the baker qualifying with a 727, giving them a total of 4786 pins bowled on the day, 130 pins behind first place Cumberlands. Marian's total gave them eighth place in the qualifying, just two pins shy of seventh place Indiana Tech.
Marian will take the lanes tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. in the first round of bracket play, taking on the No. 9 seed Tennessee Wesleyan. If the Knights win their head to head matchup they will take on the top seed University of the Cumberlands, while a loss would push Marian to the elimination bracket at 11:30 a.m.
