MU's Williams Makes Individual Cut at NAIA Championship
Silvis, Ill. - Jay Williams had a strong second round in the NAIA Tournament, and extended his final collegiate tournament by making the cut after firing a 70 in the second round of the NAIA Championship. The Marian men's golf senior is one of 10 individuals to make the cut, and will advance into the tournament on Thursday.
Williams got off to a good start making par on each of his first two holes, but shot a bogey on No. 3. A par and birdie on No. 5 brought Williams back to even par for the day, which led to three straight par holes. A bogey on No. 9 pushed the senior to plus one as he hit the turn, but Williams rebounded with a birdie on No. 10 to get to par.
Williams made par on each of the next six holes, and scored a birdie on No. 17, draining the birdie putt on two of the three par-fives on the course. Williams finished the back nine with a 34 after making par on No. 18, ending his round with a 70 for the day. Williams' two-day score of 142 allowed the senior to end the day with a position of 26th on the leaderboard, good to make the cut.
The Marian senior is one of just six athletes who made the tournament as an individual to continue their round. Williams will tee off in round three on Thursday at 10:45 a.m. ET.
