
Marian University Names Steve Simmons as Head Men's Golf Coach
INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian men's golf team has found their new head coach, as Steve Simmons, a 1990 graduate of Marian University, has been named the third head coach in program history by director of athletics Steve Downing. Simmons will begin his tenure as head coach of the men's golf program on July 31, 2023.
"I'm very excited to be back at Marian University," exclaimed Simmons. "This has been, and continues to be a special place for me. I can't thank Mr. Downing and Coach Ford enough for entrusting me with this program, and I look forward to getting to work with the team this fall."
Steve Simmons comes to Marian with nearly 30 years of coaching experience under his belt, serving as the head varsity golf coach at Zionsville High School since 1994. While at Zionsville, Simmons has led the boys golf program to a top-five ranking in the state for 13 consecutive years, and has seen 29 of his players go on to play collegiately. In 2013, Simmons helped lead Adam Wood, an eventual graduate of Duke University, to the IHSAA individual state championship. Simmons has claimed four Hoosier Crossroads Conference championships as the head coach at Zionsville, and was a four-time HCC Coach of the Year.
Simmons has been invested in the Zionsville community beyond the boys varsity program, severing as a dedicated educator by teaching wellness and physical education in the Eagles middle school system. Simmons has also worked with the Zionsville Middle School boys and girls golf teams as the head coach in addition to his varsity duties, leading three undefeated teams.
"We are really fortunate to have Coach Simmons as part of our athletics department at Marian," said director of athletics Steve Downing. "As an alumni and former student-athlete here, he knows a lot about winning, and I think he will be a big asset to what we are trying to do here. I think the players on the team will respect what he as done as a coach at Zionsville, and I look forward to the future growth of our men's golf program."
Simmons is also the director and owner of Eagle Golf Camps, leading junior leagues and clinics for avid youth golfers for nearly 25 years. Simmons also served as the IHSGCA president from 2013-2016, developing partnerships with golf vendors to offer discounted equipment for high school players, and collaborated with the IHSAA to help increase the student-athlete experience with the moving of the state championships.
An alumni of Marian University with a B.S. in Physical Education and Health, Simmons was a member of the men's basketball team at Marian, and was a member of the program's first Mid-Central Conference (Crossroads League) Championship in the 1988-89 season. Simmons would later go on to obtain his masters' degree in curriculum and instruction from Nova Southeastern University in 2005. Simmons will continue to teach in the Zionsville School Corporation in his first year coaching at Marian.
The schedule for the 2023 fall season will be announced by Coach Simmons in the coming weeks.
