Thomas Leads Trojans Over Top-Ranked Keiser
KOHLER, Wisc. – The Taylor women's golf team picked up a signature victory on Tuesday, topping No. 1 Keiser en route to the team title at the Whistling Straits Championship.
Cold temperatures and strong winds couldn't derail the Trojans on Tuesday as Taylor tallied a team score of 307 on the challenging Irish Course at iconic Whistling Straits on its way to a dominant 14-shot victory over the top-ranked Seahawks.
Senior Maddie Thomas led the way for the Trojans as the All-American earned a stunning 10-shot victory with a two-round total of 154. Thomas was the only player to break 80 amid brutal weather conditions during Monday's first round and the senior followed her opening-round 78 with a 76 in round two to pull away for the victory.
The Trojans collected four of the top six spots on the leaderboard with junior All-American Nicole Jung finishing tied for second at 164 (84-80) followed by senior Annie Stimmel in fifth place at 165 (88-77).
Junior Taylor French carded the low round of the day with a 2-over par 74 to finish in a tie for sixth place at 166 (92-74). Junior Rachel Coers finished in 14th place at 174 (88-86).
The win marked TU's fourth tournament victory of the fall season and the second consecutive win at the Whistling Straits Championship after the Trojans also claimed the team title last season.
Taylor finished the fall season with an overall head-to-head record of 34-5, including a perfect record of 21-0 against NAIA competition and an impressive 11-5 mark against NCAA Division I opponents.
