Taylor Plays to a Draw in Near Upset at No. 6 Marian
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Taylor women's soccer team (7-1-3, 2-0-1 CL) earned another point, its seventh, in the Crossroads League standings with an impressive 2-2 draw at No. 6 Marian (8-1-2, 1-1-1) Saturday night.
A competitive first half remained scoreless until the 44th minute, when defender Claire Massey scored on a header off a corner kick by Maegen Hill. The freshman's assist was her second of the season, as Hill now has four points in her past four matches played.
The Trojans took their 1-0 lead into halftime having not allowed a single shot on goal by the Knights.
TU then came out of the second half gates aggressively, as Libby Thomas created an opportunity near the endline and centered to Audrey Grimm who scored just two minutes in to the half to make it a 2-0 Taylor advantage. Grimm's fifth goal of the season brought her career total to 15, while Thomas notched her team-leading fourth assist on the play.
Though the Trojans dominated both the shots and shots on goal categories throughout the second half, Marian scored on its first shot on goal in the game in the 78th minute to make it 2-1. The Knights then netted the equalizer with three minutes remaining when they knocked in a goal after an odd bounce from a corner kick.
Despite the result, TU doubled up Marian in shots and owned an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal over the course of the match. The Trojans' two goals also tied for the most goals allowed by the Knights all season, and the TU defense held Marian to half of its average number of shot attempts.
RV Taylor looks to keep its six-game unbeaten streak alive at Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-4-2, 2-1 CL) on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m.
